The Alsatian stork holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. These migratory birds — recognisable by their black and white plumage and long necks — are a particularly common sight in the Alsatian landscape, where they find ideal conditions for nesting and breeding.

Alsace is one of the regions in Europe with the highest concentration of white storks. They return each year, after a long journey from Africa, to settle on the rooftops of Alsatian homes — particularly in villages such as Hunawihr, Riquewihr, and Obernai, where they have taken up residence on the roof of the restaurant La Halle aux Blés. Their nest is visible from the market square, right in the heart of the town.

These birds have been nesting in human dwellings for centuries. Beyond their ecological role as predators of insects and small animals, storks are also carriers of local traditions. In Alsatian culture, they are associated with birth and symbolise good luck and prosperity. Their presence is a source of pride for Alsatians and attracts thousands of tourists every year.
